Next Monday 27th January 2025, marks two significant anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia which included the killing of over 8000 Muslims. Under the theme "For a Better Future," this year's Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) which is supported by many countries, world faiths including Muslims, Jews and Christians and other organisations, invites us to learn from the past and take meaningful action toward building a more inclusive tomorrow.
In Hereford Diocese, the South Shropshire Interfaith Group is bringing together Muslim, Christian, and Jewish community members. They will host a special event on Saturday 25 January in Church Stretton focused on remembering past genocides. The event will include prayers and a time to remember supported by a group of interfaith leaders who are united and committed to seeking a better future for all. The event will take place at the United Reformed Church on the high street in Church Stretton.
As part of a series of national events, some of which will be attended by senior clergy from the Church of England, individuals are encouraged to participate in 'Light the Darkness.' This movement is an act of remembrance that asks people to place a candle in their window at 8:00 PM on January 27th to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. People are encouraged to share participation on social media with a photograph of their candle and use the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness. This act of remembrance is an opportunity for Christians and others to stand united with all victims of genocide and persecution, past and present while working together toward a future free from hatred and discrimination.
