New Hereford Funeral Service Makes Planning Easier for families

Death remains one of our most difficult conversations. Despite it being a universal human experience, many of us struggle to discuss dying and death openly, leaving families unprepared and overwhelmed when faced with making funeral arrangements during their time of grief.

Last month's Dying Matters Awareness Week highlighted the urgent need to break down the cultural stigma and taboo surrounding death and dying. Building on this important conversation, Hereford Diocese, The Church of England in Herefordshire, has launched a comprehensive new funerals ministry service specifically designed to support families in Hereford City. It aims to make the often complex administrative aspects of funeral arrangements far more straightforward and accessible.

The new service aims to ensure that everyone receives the pastoral care they need during difficult times. A single telephone line makes it easier to make all the arrangements and guarantees you will have a named minister to lead your loved ones funeral service within 24 hours of making the enquiry.

The Church of England promises that every person is entitled to a church service in their local parish church, regardless of their previous church attendance or personal beliefs. This includes the right to have either a coffin burial or ashes interred in the local parish churchyard.

While funeral services naturally include celebration of a loved one's life, the church recognises that a funeral service encompasses much more than remembrance alone. At its heart, the church funeral service acknowledges that every person - young or old, popular or unpopular - was created by God, is loved by Him, and through the service, we entrust that special person into God's eternal care and safekeeping.

"We want families to know that they don't have to navigate this difficult time alone. Our new funerals ministry service in Hereford City ensures that everyone receives the support and guidance they need, helping them understand their options and creating meaningful services that honour their loved ones,"  explains Revd Dr Elizabeth Wild, Mission Director of Mission and Ministry at Hereford Diocese.

She adds: “Anyone can request their local vicar to officiate at funeral services held at crematoria or alternative burial locations. We hope this service makes the process as easy as possible for families at a difficult time.”

The traditional words of the Church of England funeral service have provided comfort to countless families for generations. Their familiar and well-recognised phrases often bring particular solace to family members during their time of grief, offering both continuity and hope.

Local vicars are available to help families personalise services according to their wishes and the character of their loved one. This can include selecting meaningful Bible readings, choosing appropriate poems, and incorporating music that held special significance. The aim is to create a service that both honours the deceased and provides comfort to those who mourn.

Families in Hereford City who would like to learn more about the funerals ministry service or discuss arrangements can contact the new service by telephone 01432 674555 or email Hereford.funerals@hereford.anglican.org
