The Golden Valley Pilgrimage Route (known as the Golden Valley Pilgrim Way) has been recognised as Herefordshire's unsung hero at this week’s Visit Herefordshire Tourism Awards. The pilgrimage route received the honour during a celebratory ceremony held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the annual awards night that showcased the best of the county's thriving tourism industry. Herefordshire is one of the UK’s least populated counties and is often overlooked as a tourism destination despite having many hidden gems.
This ancient pilgrimage path winds through some of South West Herefordshire's most picturesque landscapes and connects several historic churches and sacred sites between the Cathedral in Hereford to the edge of the Black Mountains, bordering Wales. It has been steadily gaining popularity among spiritual travellers and hiking enthusiasts alike. The award acknowledges the dedicated work of Revd Simon Lockett and Anne Lloyd, Mission Coordinator for Abbeydore Deanery, who have helped to preserve and promote this cultural treasure.
Reverend Simon Lockett who accepted the award on behalf of the tiny team that supports and organises the pilgrimages expressed his delight: “This recognition means the world to everyone who has contributed to making the Golden Valley Pilgrimage Route a success over the past few years.”
Following this local recognition, the Golden Valley Pilgrimage Route will now be nominated for a Visit England Award of Excellence, potentially bringing national attention to this Hereforshire gem. This nomination places the route alongside the country’s most exceptional tourism experiences.
The Visit Herefordshire Tourism Awards, launched by the Herefordshire County BID, is a celebration event in the county. The awards aim to shine a spotlight on the outstanding visitor experiences available throughout Herefordshire's diverse landscape and “we’re delighted to be recognised alongside them all”, concludes Simon.
For those interested in experiencing the award-winning pilgrimage route firsthand, guided walks are available please email Anne Lloyd at Abbeydore Deanery.
