Church of England schools live out our Christian values every day and exemplify faith in action. They shine a light on how generosity can transform lives, investing in young people's futures and creating unique opportunities, experiences and learning environments. "When we invest generously in providing opportunities for our young people, we're not just developing life skills or delivering an education – we're nurturing souls and building character in line with our Christian ethos.” Explains Gemma Martin, Diocesan Director of Education for Hereford Diocese. She adds: “The transformation we witness from pupils in our near 80 Church of England schools across the diocese, reflects Christ's teaching about helping others reach their full potential.”
In September 2024, The Hereford CE Academy is one of three Church of England secondary schools in the diocese, launched an inspiring new Royal Navy Combined Cadet Force (CCF) section. The initiative is a commitment to nurturing not just the academic growth of pupils, but their character, leadership, and sense of service to others – all core Christian values.
The 30 cadets and five dedicated staff members have enjoyed a varied program of activities, and the impact of this generous investment is already evident throughout the school community. Parents, governors, and staff have noted positive changes in pupil behaviour and discipline, reflecting the Christian values of respect, responsibility, and service to others. This transformation extends beyond CCF activities into daily school life, showing how generous investment in character development can create ripple effects throughout our school communities.
As one of the cadet’s explains: "Being in the CCF has taught me about teamwork and discipline which has helped me to improve my behaviour in school. I am enjoying school more than ever this year.”
This programme has been made possible thanks to an endowment fund that exists to specifically support the education of Hereford CE Academy pupils and has enabled CCF cadets to enjoy a wide range of activities as part of the program. Gemma concludes, “It is a wonderful example of living out another Christian value, generosity - people giving time, skills and resources. Of course, there are lots of other factors involved, too. Good stewardship of an endowment fund and a partnership with the Reserve Forces Cadets Association. This all shows how we are part of a greater story of transformation. Helping these pupils to discover their potential and develop into confident, capable young people who understand the power of generosity themselves.”
Further details about the experience of pupils who have enjoyed the Hereford CE Academy CCF programme and plans for the future of the cadet force at the school can be found in an article on the West Midland Reserve Forces & Cadets Association website.
