In 1470 the garden was reduced to make the cloisters.
Bishop John Stanberry gave half the Palace Garden to the Dean and Chapter to build the Vicar’s choral cloister in 1470. The walkway between the cathedral & this cloister was designed to keep the Vicars choral dry when walking to and from the cathedral for services.
This is the covered walkway from the cathedral out of St John's door which leads into The Palace garden but also into the cloisters which are behind this 14th century wall. (if you join one of the cathedral garden tours you get a chance to visit the cloisters).
At Christmas 2023, this wall collapsed and because the whole garden is listed, including the walls, the repairs can only be completed after a complex series of planning applications have been approved.
