Early Residents of the Palace

Bishop Robert de Bethune  1131-1148

The Palace may have been adapted to allow 40 Monks from Llanthony (in Wales)  to stay for two years with their former prior, Bishop Robert.

Civil war of Stephen & Matilda 1135-54

King Stephen’s chair in the cathedral marks Stephen’s visit in 1138 on Pentecost Sunday after he had taken the castle from Matilda. However, after the constable of Gloucester (Miles, later to be short-lived Earl of Hereford crossed Stephen, Matilda’s side retaliated using the cathedral as stabling and the tower to launch missiles at the castle. The Bishop left for an Augustinian Priory in the diocese till Miles was shot in a hunting accident & Bethune returned to repair the cathedral, palace & diocese.
