Through this gate is the Dean’s garden. The dean is the boss of the cathedral. The Bishop, although technically the boss of the dean and with the authority to appoint the dean, is not the boss of the cathedral. Over the centuries relations between the dean and the bishop have been strained. Occasionally this was exacerbated by a “Bishop’s visitation” – a bit like an OFSTED or CQC inspection. Happily, relations between the current bishop and dean are very cordial.
