The Bishop of Hereford is seeking to appoint a new Diocesan Chancellor with effect 11 July 2026.

The Diocesan Chancellor will be a judge, or a senior barrister or solicitor of good standing and will be a communicant member of the Church of England.

The Diocese of Hereford is formed from Herefordshire, South Shropshire, some Welsh parishes along the border, and a portion of Worcestershire. With a population of about 320,000, we are predominately a rural diocese, and we have developed a national reputation for the creative use of our church buildings. Of our 405 church buildings 95% mostly are Grade 1 or 2*/2.

The new Chancellor will have an important role to play. The Chancellor, as the independent judge of the Consistory Court, will oversee legal issues across the Diocese, especially those which relate to the use of and alterations to church buildings and land. She or he will work closely with the Diocesan Registrar, the Archdeacons and the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

For an Informal conversation about the position please contact the Diocesan Registrar, Mr Jeremy Wilding, Hereford Diocesan Registry, Gabbs Solicitors, 14 Broad Street, Hereford HR4 9AP or by email: jwilding@gabbs.biz

Applications should be sent to Kerry Preedy HR Manager the Diocesan Office, The Palace, Hereford, HR4 9BL or via email HR@hereford.anglican.org
