Exploring the creative expression of faith through Art

Faith in art

Faith in art is a long-held tradition in the church with man of the world’s greatest works of art depicting Biblical characters or interpreting passages of the Bible. Artists throughout history have long used it as a way to express faith.  Michaelangelo in particular, had a very strong spiritual connection with his work, stating: "Art is the gift of God and must be used to His glory."

In West Hereford Churches’ a group called Faith in Art group has been running for just over a year. It started with just two artists and has grown to nearly 15 regular members including some from other churches in the city. The membership has mostly grown through word of mouth.

Melody Carter, founding member and artist, explains: “As an ecumenical group it works well and includes painters, sculptors, textile artists, writers and those that create with mixed media. One or two members come because they enjoy and appreciate art or use it in their worship or prayer time.”

To see people painting or drawing in Church is a point of curiosity but there is a strong basis for this expression of faith and throughout the Bible, God uses people to create things to illustrate his meaning. Prophetic Art is a recognised gift of the Holy Spirit.

For many who practice, they are creating something that illustrates a message from God through visual imagery; be that photography, drawing, sculpture, painting or any other kind of artwork that's created.

“The group will often discuss individuals’ creative works,” adds Melody.   “We do this in order to encourage each other in our faith and in our creative work.”

The Group is now working on a Summer Art Exhibition to be held at All Saints Church during June and July.  They hope to continue their growth in faith, discipleship and numbers with a view to sharing the community amongst other creative Christians across the diocese.
