Get to know...Carl Steventon

This week we chatted with Carl Steventon.

Carl has worked for the diocese safeguarding team for over a year. He says that has been made very welcome from day one. Prior to joining the team, Carl was a Police Officer for 30 years. He retired from West Midlands Police Force in 2020. Carl lives in a small village in Beckbury, which is close to RAF Cosford. He is married and has 2 young children. He is involved in the Villages Under 14 Football team and is the Vice Chair of Shropshire and Herefordshire Boys County Junior Golf.

For the last 4 years, He has been the Chair of Governors for The Trinity Federation, which includes two of the Diocese’s Primary Schools.

We recently caught up with him for a chat:

I: Hello Carl. Thank you for taking part in the #2min interview.  You know how this works, so we'll go straight in with the first question - What is your favourite food?

CS: My favourite food is curry. I particularly like the hotter varieties. I really like Rogan Josh curry. My wife and I try and visit local restaurants as much as possible. Unfortunately, my two boys do not share my wife and my love for this sort of food.

I: Visiting local restaurants is a great way to support local businesses and also a treat. Question two - Where is the most interesting place you have visited?

CS: The most interesting place I visited was Sri Lanka. This opened my eyes for various reasons. The beauty of the country with its ancient buildings and friendly culture. People could not do enough for you. We visited 6 months after the tsunami had devastated the region and the togetherness of the people was fantastic to see in the rebuilding of the area. I also saw the other side of Sri Lanka the poverty and the living conditions that the vast majority of people live in. It was a very sad thing to see. They are images that will stay with me forever.

I: Question three is our last one and the same one we ask everyone - What do you enjoy about working at Hereford Diocese?
CS: What I love about Hereford Diocese are the people. They are all very friendly and helpful. Having completed a 30-year service in the Police Force, I thought that I would find it difficult to adapt to a different work setting. I was made to feel welcome by all. Everyone speaks with such friendliness and generosity - it is second to none!
