Statement following the recent BBC2 programme regarding Bishop Peter Ball and church safeguarding

Published on: 15th January 2020

Last night, BBC2 broadcast the second part of Exposed: The Church’s Darkest Secret, which looked at the sexual abuse carried out by the former Bishop of Gloucester, Bishop Peter Ball, and the attempts to bring him to justice. The Diocese of Hereford is committed to following the guidance and standards as set by Archbishop Justin Welby and equally believe safeguarding should be at the heart of our Christian faith.

If anybody was affected by this programme, please contact our Diocesan Safeguarding Team on 07875 757396 / 01746 785168. They can also be emailed via m.mcphee@hereford.anglican.org.

We recognise that this option may not feel safe for those with a lived experience of abuse from within the Church. A dedicated telephone helpline, operating independently from the Church, has therefore been set up. The number is 0800 80 20 20 and is being run by the NSPCC Helpline for Children and Adults.
