UNIQUE PLAN TO TAKE NOTE OF CHURCH MUSIC MAKING

A unique 'snapshot' of music making in the churches of the Diocese is to be created this summer. It will be done as part of the Royal School of Church Music's "Music Sunday" on June 13th.

The Hereford and South Shropshire Area Group of the RSCM wants details of all the music sung or played in services throughout the Diocese on that day as a way to celebrate the variety of music making in our churches.

Hereford Cathedral Organist, Peter Dyke, said: "Every Sunday in hundreds of churches across the Diocese of Hereford, hymns, songs psalms and anthems are sung and organ music and other instrumental pieces are played to help enrich the worship. Music Sunday gives us an opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of this vast pool of talent, effort and goodwill,"

He added: "We would like to know what hymns or songs are sung that day, along with details of any organ pieces, choir items or instrumental music, including improvising, and hope to be able to publish the summarised results in a future edition of the NEWSpaper."

Welcoming the Music Sunday initiative in the Diocese, the Bishop of Hereford said: "There is a wealth of music in our churches and this will give us an opportunity to see what exactly is going on and to celebrate the rich diversity of that music making."

Gathering such a large amount of information will be a substantial task so, in an effort, to save postage costs the organisers are hoping musicians, clergy or churchwardens will send details by e-mail where possible. More details of how to submit information using The NEWSpaper and our pages of the Diocesan website - www.hereford.anglican.org - will be available in time for everyone to ensure their music is included in the 'snapshot'.

Anyone interested in helping with this unique project, or who might have useful contact information, should contact the Area Secretary, Janet Wardle on wardleja@hotmail.com or Peter Dyke on peter.dyke@herefordcathedral.org
